The Author
Always the outsider, Susan suffered through her teen years as a lonely, book-loving misfit who made it through high school by escaping into the fantastic world of books. Now she mentors the same type of young people she once was. For the past eight years, she has worked with local high school students to build self-worth through the creative arts. Her work as a YA novelist reflects this creative connection to the young people of the island. She especially enjoys applying her educational background in English and Spanish literature to enhance the literary and artistic activities she shares with the students.
And when the mentoring is done, you will find her curled up in her home library, relaxing with a good book that will have something to do with ordinary young people involved in extraordinary experiences. Later, when the rest of her family is asleep, she’ll grab a cup of strong Puerto Rican coffee and sit down at her computer. There she will work on her next novel, or edit a manuscript, or research the themes that run through her work: anti-bullying initiatives, teen suicide prevention, and spiritual warfare.
Susan doesn’t quite fit into the culture of Puerto Rico, but in not fitting in, she belongs. The legacy of Connecticut lives in her. She is a misfit in the colorful, chaotic world that has become her home.
